Day 9 – Farewell to South Africa & A Safari We'll Never Forget!

Time to Say Goodbye.

Wow—what a journey it’s been. I truly can’t believe our incredible week at Sebatana has come to an end. Today, we said our goodbyes, settled our bills, handed out well-deserved tips, and began the long journey home. Though our suitcases were heavier (and our hearts a little too), we left with memories that will last a lifetime.

Before we even stepped onto the bus, the Sebatana team gave us the most heartwarming send-off—singing, dancing, and waving goodbye as we drove away. It was such a touching gesture and the perfect way to close our time at the lodge.

Our farewell

The Travel Home: One Last Adventure (Sort Of)

After breakfast, we took care of the last bits—settling our final bill and distributing tips among the wonderful staff who made our stay so memorable.

Our departure plan included a stop at the Apartheid Museum, a culturally significant site I was really looking forward to. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go as expected and we didn’t end up visiting. That said, we did get refunded for the missed excursion, which was greatly appreciated.

Once at the airport, check-in was smooth, and after clearing security, we explored our food options. Some fellow travellers had booked into various airport lounges, and we decided to enquire about the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse. As Flying Club members, we were kindly granted access (though there was a fee—I wish I could remember the exact amount!). I’m not sure if this is always an option or if we just got lucky with available space.

Inside the Clubhouse, we enjoyed great food, drinks, and a moment to unwind before boarding our flight. The flight home was uneventful (just the way I like it!) and we even landed ahead of schedule.

Holiday Summary: One Unforgettable Week in South Africa 🇿🇦

Looking back, I can say without hesitation that this has been one of the most incredible trips of my life. From the very first game drive to the final sunset toast at Kudu Rock, every day brought something new and special.

Here’s a quick look at what made this safari unforgettable:

Elephant Lodge at Sebatana Private Reserve – Comfortable, welcoming, and full of character.
Knowledgeable Guides – Always going the extra mile (literally!) to help us spot wildlife and learn about the bush.
The Big Five – Yes, we saw all five: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo!
Optional Extras – From night safaris to tribal evenings, every add-on felt meaningful and unique.
New Friendships – The people we met on this trip were a huge part of what made it so special.
So. Much. Food. – Every meal was an experience in itself, with plenty of surprises along the way.

This trip gave us moments of wonder, plenty of laughs, a few happy tears, and a deeper appreciation for the wild, beautiful heart of South Africa. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Final Thoughts: Until Next Time…

If you’re thinking about doing a safari—do it. Book it. Plan it. Count down the days. It’s the kind of experience that shifts your perspective and stays with you forever.

Until next time—
Keep dreaming big, traveling far, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
See you soon,
Sarah x
