Easter Weekend 2025: Riding the Bernina Express (Part 2 of 3)
A Journey Like No Other
Switzerland never stops delivering when it comes to breathtaking experiences, and the Bernina Express was nothing short of magical. This was a true bucket-list moment, and one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Travelling first class from Chur to Tirano, we were treated to alpine views, snow-capped peaks, and a taste of Swiss charm from start to finish.
Chur to Tirano
The Bernina Express route is legendary for a reason. It connects Chur (Switzerland’s oldest city) with Tirano in northern Italy, crossing the Swiss Engadin Alps and the iconic Bernina Pass.
Here are just a few of the key stops and sights the train passes:
Chur
Thusis
Tiefencastel
Filisur
Bergün
Preda
Spinas
Samedan
Pontresina
Alp Grüm (stunning lookout) we where able to get off the train at this point.
Ospizio Bernina (the highest point)
Poschiavo
Brusio (famous circular viaduct)
Tirano (Italy)
This UNESCO World Heritage railway climbs to over 2,253 metres (7,391 ft) at Ospizio Bernina – and trust me, the views are worth every metre.
First Class Views, Misty Peaks & Chocolate Treats
Travelling first class made this journey even more memorable. The panoramic windows gave us unobstructed views of glaciers, alpine lakes, dramatic valleys, and picture-postcard villages.
About halfway through, we reached the highest point at Ospizio Bernina, where the train made a short stop allowing us to get out and stretch our legs. Although it was misty and cool, it added to the atmosphere – it felt like stepping into another world.
First Class Seats
One of the highlights? Watching skiers and snowboarders gliding down the slopes as we climbed. It was mid-April and I was surprised to see the mountains still so beautifully snow-capped.
Drinks and light snacks were offered during the ride (at an additional charge), but first-class passengers also received a complimentary chilled tea in a carton and a metal tin shaped like the Bernina Express filled with Lindt chocolates. That sweet treat absolutely hit the spot and made the moment even more special!
Tips for Your Bernina Express Day
Book First Class: The extra comfort and larger windows are 100% worth it for a scenic route like this.
Bring a Camera: Photos just don’t do it justice – but you’ll want to try.
Layer Up: Even in spring, the high altitudes are chilly – especially when you step off the train.
Snacks & Drinks: Bring your own if you prefer not to pay extra for onboard service.
Window Seats: They make all the difference – get there early to settle in!
Italian Charm in Tirano and Milan
From snow to sunshine, we crossed into Italy and spent the afternoon exploring Tirano – a small town with big character. But the journey didn’t stop there! We continued onwards to Milan, where we spent two nights soaking up Italian city life.
Check out Part 3 for all the details – Tirano, Milan, food, sights, and the perfect end to an unforgettable Easter weekend.
Until next time – keep dreaming big, travelling far, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
See you soon,
